How To Know If Your Basement Has Had Water Damage

Blog

As a homeowner, you will want to make sure that your home is as safe and dry as possible, starting with the basement. After all, a lot of people find that their basements are the main problems when it comes to water creeping into their home. Even if your basement is currently dry, you will want to know what to look for when looking for signs of water trouble that you may have missed in the past or that occurred before you bought the home. Here are some of the signs of a leaky basement:

You Always Notice A Musty Smell

Whenever you enter the basement, you will want to take a few moments to try to notice any smells that might be present down there. Is there a musty odor throughout the basement? If so, this might be your first indication that there is a water leak in your basement, even if you have not yet been able to spot the exact location of the leak. It might not even be a consistent leak, but something that happens just enough to cause a musty smell throughout the area.

There Is Efflorescence Forming On The Walls

Take a close look at the walls within your basement. Do you notice a caulk-like white substance growing? If so, you will want to take note and then call a basement waterproofing company. This mineral is called efflorescence and it is a sign that water is seeping in through your basement walls, even if it is not coming through at a rapid enough pace for you to see the water pouring in.

A Wall Is Curving In

Do not make the mistake of assuming that this is something that just typically happens to some basement walls as a house ages. This is because a curved or bowed wall is a sign that there is a significant amount of water damage happening and you will need to take quick action in order to resolve the issue. If you don't, then there is a very good chance that the wall is going to continue to move inward until it falls apart. Basement bricks and stones will fall onto your floor, as well as a lot of soil.

When in doubt, you will want to get in contact with a skilled waterproofing company. They will be able to examine your basement to determine if you need their services and to what extent you need them.

Finishing Our Property

When I first moved into our house, I realized that the place needed a little bit of work. In addition to missing part of the back lawn, there was also an empty RV pad and a missing patio. I thought about what to do, and I realized that the best thing might be to hire a concrete contractor to make things right. After we got settled, we started pricing services. We were able to find an incredible contractor that we knew would do a good job. After he poured the pads, it was amazing to see how much better things looked. Read my blog for ideas on how to finish your property, so that you aren't left looking at an eyesore.
